Mobile phones and smart applications have become an important if not the key factor in many current development initiatives. One of the main questions remaining is: Which are the key “killer” applications that make a real difference for personal and community development, provide real solutions and benefits, add value to the market place and are not just applications in search for a use? The main aim of the competition is to identify effective mobile phone applications for development and make them available globally whilst providing sustainability and growth for the application developers and network/service providers that offer the applications.

Virtual Market of Opportunities
Over the last 14 years, GKPF has played a crucial role as the Global Market Place for Development abilities and needs. GKPF enables practitioners and organizations to bring forward and offer their specific goods for all to see. In turn they are able to acquire the goods and abilities that are needed to make themselves stronger and more effective. The trading on this Global Marketplace for Development is done through sharing knowledge, building partnerships and the implementation of joint projects and activities. GKPF acts as market broker and market crier.
The physical and virtual Market of Opportunities is one of the actual manifestations of the GKPF mission and vision. What the MoO does is simply to give individuals and organizations the possibility to express and document their Needs and Abilities. The physical MoO which is taking place from time to time at conferences, and the virtual MoO will be implemented on the GKPF site soon. Online forms are posted; matches are made through automatic keyword matches or matchmaking through matchmakers. The participants of the virtual MoO also have access to additional facilities such as virtual meeting rooms, storehouses for documents and media, news feeds, promotion and features through “Market Criers”, an advocacy corner, resource mobilization tools and more.
But the MoO has also additional important functions. It is an ideal tool to break open rigid “silos” as they so often occur in organizations that are composed of specific interest groups and constituencies. The MoO is one tool to find new ways for these groups to communicate with each other in a constructive way without questioning or force to change any of the participants. The plan is to create a virtual MoO on the GKPF www site.
The MoO has five major elements:
1. The Organization/Project stalls, where the organization and projects are displayed
2. The Wall of Opportunities, where the organizational needs and Abilities are displayed
3. Market crier, who features specific projects and organizations
4. Matchmaker, consists of a MoO search engine, physical and automatic matchmaking based on classifications and key words
5. Meeting Place, for communication between Projects and organizations
